腕一本分ほどの距離。人間関係としては「よそよそしい距離」であり、仕事上においては「近すぎない距離」。親しきなかにも…。

対等な条件で取り引きができるような、人々に信頼される組織を構築するには、何世代もの時間がかかる。

大根ならぬハム役者「ham actor」

(ワザとらしくて下手な芝居をする)大根役者


【語源】日本で言う「大根役者」は、その昔、芝居の化粧を落とすのに大根を使ったからという説がある。一方、英語の「ハム(豚の脂身)」も同様の説があり、売れない役者ほどメークを落とすのにブタ(ハム)の脂を使っていたのだそうだ。


文例:
Prayuth Chan-ocha, Thailand's prime minister, sometimes resembles a ham actor ad-libbing his way through an audition for a role as an unhinged director. 

タイの首相、プラユット・チャンオチャが大根役者に思えることがある。彼は抑えのきかない監督の役柄をアドリブで押し通すんだ。

【語源】昔のタイでは、ホワイト・エレファント(白い象)は珍しいので神聖な動物と見なされており、それを捕まえると王様に献上され、王様だけがそれに乗ることができた。ところが、エサ代が高くつくという問題があった。そこで王様は、気に入らない家来にホワイト・エレファントを与えた。ところが、それを使うことも、乗ることも、処分することも許されず、ただエサ代がかさむばかりで破産に追い込まれた(英辞郎)。


文例:
Despite the risk of white elephants such as Ciudad Real Central Airport in Spain, which closed only a few years after opening, politicians still tend to prioritise eye-catching schemes over duller but more practical ones.

無用の長物(white elephants)になってしまう恐れがある。たとえばスペインのシウダ・レアル・セントラル空港(Ciudad Real Central Airport)は開港からわずか数年で閉鎖に追い込まれた。それでも政治家たちは、つまらないがより実用的な計画よりも、人目を引く計画(eye-catching schemes)を優先させてしまう傾向が依然として強い。
