ドイツの若者言葉「merkeln」とは？

「merkeln」とは？

ドイツの首相、アンゲラ・メルケル（Angela Merkel）を文字った言葉（動詞化した単語）で、「Youth Word of the Year（若者言葉大賞）2015」にノミネートされている（日本であれば「安倍るん」か？）。

Using Chancellor Angela Merkel’s name as a verb — and not a flattering one — “merkeln” means to be unable to take decisions or give your own opinions and can be used to describe someone who just stays there without doing anything.
アンゲラ・メルケル首相の名前を動詞（verb）として用いたもの。決して褒め言葉ではない。「merkeln」の意味するところは「決断できない」「自分の意見を言えない」「何することなく、ただそこにいる人」。

 エコノミスト誌にはこうある。

This may surprise foreigners who associate her with a stubborn imposition of austerity. But at home she is considered wobbly or absent in big debates from immigration to gay marriage.

 The leading contender in a "youth word 2015" competition is currently the verb merkeln. It means to avoid big decisions with maximum delay, passivity and obfuscation.
動詞「メルケルン（merkeln）」は現在、ドイツの若者言葉2015で首位争いをしている。その意味は、他人まかせとごまかしでもって、大きな決断をできるかぎり引きのばすことだ。

ロシアの「monogorod」とは？

エコノミスト誌（August 22nd 2015）のロシア記事で、"monogorod"という言葉が出てきた。日本の辞書にその意味は記されていない。以下、記事文の引用。

Closer to the other Moscow, the highway narrows to two lanes. Fruit stands overflowing with watermelons line the approach to Kuvshinovo, a "monogorod" or company town, built around a massive paper and cardboard mill. "If the factory didn't exist, the city would turn into a hamlet," says Aleksei Tsoi, the mill's director of personnel. That worries the central government, as some 10% of Russia's population lives in such cities, and funds to support them are drying up. The government has classified 94 of its 314 monogorods as "red zones" at risk of economic collapse, up from 75 last year.

記事によれば、"monogorod"というのはロシアの行政単位における市町村の一つで、ロシアには314の "monogorod" が存在し、人口のおよそ10％がそうした町に住んでいるとのこと。

しかし、企業に依存しすぎていた "monogorod" は近年の景気後退の影響をもろに受けてしまい、2015年現在、314のうち94（およそ30％）の "monogorod" は経済崩壊の危機に瀕しているそうで、ロシア政府からはレッド・ゾーンに指定されている。

エコノミスト誌は "monogorod" を簡単に、"company town（企業の町）" と説明している。その工場で働いていたというアレクセイ（Aleksei）氏は「もしこの町にこの工場がなくなったら、ここは村（hamlet）になり下がってしまうだろう」と語っている。



一方、"monogorod" を英語検索したところ、以下の説明に出くわした。

Monogorods are Russian towns that survive purely on the basis of one major factory. Everywhere in the world, there are towns and cities that grew up around particular industries, but the Soviet Union's planned economy made the situation more extreme, and there are more than 500 such places in Russia today （http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/dispatches/2009/05/a_town_called_asbest.html）.

この文面によれば、"monogorod" とは大きな工場だけをベースに生き残った町（Russian towns that survive purely on the basis of one major factory）とのこと。"monogorod" はソ連邦時代にロシアだけにかぎらず世界中にあったそうだが、ソ連の計画経済が失敗したため、現在は500以上がロシア地域に存在するとのこと。

エコノミスト誌によれば、小沢一郎氏は心温く、人とのふれあいを好みながらも、「大衆の味方（man of the people）」ではなく、優秀な戦略家（a brilliant strategist）だという。

紅茶となると、英国人はことさらにウルサイようで、各人には各人の好みの銘柄、好みのティーカップがあるそうだ。この表現は紅茶だけに限らず、自分の好みやこだわりを示す。

一匹狼「maverick」

一匹狼「maverick」…「maverick」の元の意味は「焼き印のない牛」。つまり、所属の不明な牛である（一匹狼ならぬ一匹牛？）。そこから、「無所属」「異端児」などの意味となる。そう言えば、映画「トップガン」の主人公の名前も…。

長期保存「moth-ball」

「moth」は「ガ（蛾）」のことで、「moth-ball」は「防虫剤（玉）」のこと。虫から長く衣類を守ることから、長期保存という意味になる。また、「（モノを）仕舞いこむ」、「（考えを）棚上げする」などという意味にもなる。

「boggle」は驚きで圧倒されるという意味。すでに補聴器や軍用機のハイテク部品が「3D（立体）印刷」で作られているのだ！

肉体労働者「manual worker」

「manual（マニュアル）」は「やり方の説明書」という意味だが、もともとは「手」を意味し、それが手作業という意味になる。ちなみに、マニュアル車は「手動で」ギアを変える車である。

多民族国家「multi-ethnic society」

アメリカは、大量の移民を活用して熟練労働力を築き上げることに成功した希有な例だ。

市場操作「market manipulation」

「manipulation」は「ごまかし、小細工」などの意味。ちなみに、アメリカが中国によく言う為替操作国は「currency manipulator」

移り気なパートナー「mercurial partner」

「mercurial」には「水星の」という意味もある。古来より「水星の影響を受けると、人間の性格が変わりやすくなる」と信じられていため、「変わりやすい」という意味になった。

新品同様「mint condition」

「mint」は植物のミントの他に、「造幣局」という意味もある。鋳造されたばかりの新品のコイン、それがミント・コンディションである。もちろん、この言葉は貨幣以外の新品全般に用いられる。
