【語源】日本で言う「大根役者」は、その昔、芝居の化粧を落とすのに大根を使ったからという説がある。一方、英語の「ハム（豚の脂身）」も同様の説があり、売れない役者ほどメークを落とすのにブタ（ハム）の脂を使っていたのだそうだ。

【語源】昔のタイでは、ホワイト・エレファント（白い象）は珍しいので神聖な動物と見なされており、それを捕まえると王様に献上され、王様だけがそれに乗ることができた。ところが、エサ代が高くつくという問題があった。そこで王様は、気に入らない家来にホワイト・エレファントを与えた。ところが、それを使うことも、乗ることも、処分することも許されず、ただエサ代がかさむばかりで破産に追い込まれた（英辞郎）。


文例：

Despite the risk of white elephants such as Ciudad Real Central Airport in Spain, which closed only a few years after opening, politicians still tend to prioritise eye-catching schemes over duller but more practical ones.

◆ "racket"は法律の専門用語で、「組織的に行われる不正」を意味するものです。ちなみに、テニスなどのラケットとは関係がありません。テニスの“ラケット”はアラビア語（rahah: 手のひら）～フランス語起源（raquette, rachette）ですが、犯罪の"racket"は「やかましい音の擬音語」だそうです（http://eigo-1-1.blogspot.jp/2014/01/racketeer.html）。


文例：

Charging for public services sometimes makes sense. Often, though, it is a racket.

公共サービスを有料にすることは、ある意味、理にかなっている。がしかし、ともすれば詐欺まがい（a racket）になってしまう。
