ゴマならぬカレーをする？「curry favor」

◆ ややもすると「カレー味（curry flavor）」と勘違いしてしまう。だが、ここで言う「curry」はインド起源のカレー（kari）ではなく、フランス起源の correir（のちにcurreir）で、馬をブラッシングするという意味。「curry comb」といえば馬用のブラシだ。




以下、参考までに

curry favor は「偽善的な行為をする」を意味する中世のフランス語の慣用句 correir fauvel （直訳は「栗毛色の馬のコーミングをする」）の fauvel が英語で curry favel となり，　その　favel が、「お気に入り」の favor と置きかえられて生まれた慣用句のようです（http://www.eigo21.com/etc/kimagure/z089.htm）。

びっくりのデータ「core blimey」

core blimey

これはエコノミスト誌の造語である。日本のCPI（consumer price index, 消費者物価指数）が政府の予想に反してさっぱり上がっていなかったことへの”驚き（皮肉）”を表している。



その元となっている単語は
cor-blimey（gor-blimey）

「God blind me」が短縮化した言葉で、「えっ、これは驚きだ！」など、驚きを表す感嘆詞。

Urban Dictionary には、こう説明されている。
An expression of surprise or gratitude. 
驚きや感謝の表現



「God blind me」の、さらに語源をさかのぼれば、「May God blind me if it is not so（もしそれがそうでないのなら、神よ、私を盲目にしてください）」となる。回りくどい表現であるが、簡単に言えば「神にかけて私は間違いない」と断言していることになる。こうなるともはや「cor-blimey」の驚きの意味合いはさっぱりない。

ドイツの若者言葉「merkeln」とは？

「merkeln」とは？

ドイツの首相、アンゲラ・メルケル（Angela Merkel）を文字った言葉（動詞化した単語）で、「Youth Word of the Year（若者言葉大賞）2015」にノミネートされている（日本であれば「安倍るん」か？）。

Using Chancellor Angela Merkel’s name as a verb — and not a flattering one — “merkeln” means to be unable to take decisions or give your own opinions and can be used to describe someone who just stays there without doing anything.
アンゲラ・メルケル首相の名前を動詞（verb）として用いたもの。決して褒め言葉ではない。「merkeln」の意味するところは「決断できない」「自分の意見を言えない」「何することなく、ただそこにいる人」。

 エコノミスト誌にはこうある。

This may surprise foreigners who associate her with a stubborn imposition of austerity. But at home she is considered wobbly or absent in big debates from immigration to gay marriage.
メルケル首相を「緊縮財政を押し付ける頑固者」と思っている外国人は驚くかもしれない。だが、ドイツ国内での彼女はもっと頼りなく、移民問題や同性婚などの大議論には知らん顔だ。

 The leading contender in a "youth word 2015" competition is currently the verb merkeln. It means to avoid big decisions with maximum delay, passivity and obfuscation.
動詞「メルケルン（merkeln）」は現在、ドイツの若者言葉2015で首位争いをしている。その意味は、他人まかせとごまかしでもって、大きな決断をできるかぎり引きのばすことだ。

◆「arch（アーチ）」という単語には「半円状（弓なり）」という意味の他に、接頭辞として「主な、首位の、第一の」という意味がある。たとえば建築家「architect」は「第一の大工（arch + tect）」、接尾辞として君主「monarch（mon + arch）」など。ギリシャ語で arch は「起源、初め、原点」。
